The gameplay of Gun Mayhem

Stages are floating platforms surrounded by empty space, and the only way to lose is to leave the stage. Hits don’t kill they push. The more hits an opponent has taken, the further each subsequent one sends them, so the game is about steadily building pressure and then landing one shot at the edge.

That makes positioning more important than accuracy. A player standing in the middle of the stage can absorb a lot; the same player near the edge can be finished with a single connection. Most of the skill is in controlling where the fight happens.

Rounds are short and lives are limited, so a match plays out in a couple of minutes.

How recovery works

Getting knocked off the platform isn’t necessarily fatal. You get a limited number of mid-air jumps to make it back, and using them well is what separates players who survive knockbacks from ones who don’t.

The mistake almost everyone makes early is burning every jump immediately in a panic. Falling for a moment first, then jumping once you’ve stopped being pushed sideways, gets you far more distance than mashing the button on the way out.

All punishing choices in the game

Fighting near the edge. If you’re closer to the drop than your opponent, every exchange favours them. Push the fight toward the centre before committing to it.

Burning recovery jumps early. Jumping the instant you leave the stage wastes the jumps on horizontal momentum you can’t fight. Wait a beat, then use them.

Chasing an opponent off-stage. Following someone into open space to finish them often means you both fall. Let them come back and meet them at the ledge instead.

Ignoring the crates. Weapon drops change the balance of a round substantially. Being the one holding a strong weapon matters more than any individual exchange.
